Data can be added to a project either as part of creating the project, or anytime afterward. There are three different types of data that you can add to a project:
- Data in existing data.world datasets
- Files that will only be used in the project
- Data in a new dataset
Data in existing data.world datasets
To find data in existing data.world datasets click on the + Add button next to your Project directory header and select Dataset:
You will be presented with the option to choose from your library, your bookmarks, or datasets from the data.world community that you've recently accessed. You can also search for a dataset in the search bar. Detailed information about using the search bar in data.world can be found in the article Using search:
If there are results you'd like to link to your project, simply click the Link button to the right of the dataset name. You can link as many datasets as you'd like, and if you accidentally link one just click the Linked button to remove the dataset from the project.
When you're finished click Done to exit
Upload files directly to the project
Uploading files and data directly to your data project is great for supporting materials such as notebooks, project specific data and documentation, reports, findings and so on. You can add files directly to your project by clicking the + Add button next to your Project directory header and select Project file:
NOTE: Files added to the project are not visible anywhere else on data.world. If there are files that you want to access from more than one project, it's better to upload them to a dataset than to a project. For information on other ways to add data to your project see the article Getting your data into data.world.
Create and link your own dataset
If you have data that might be used on other data projects, we recommend adding the raw data to a dataset and then linking that data to a project where you will do further analysis. This will allow you to link and access the dataset from multiple projects without having to upload over and over again.
In order to create a new dataset you'll need to exit from the project workspace (one way is to select the data.world logo in the upper-left corner of the window to go back to your home page). Like the project, the dataset can be owned by your organization, automatically granting everyone in your team access to it. Detailed instructions for creating a dataset can be found here. Once you have created the dataset, click on the dropdown arrow next to Explore this dataset on the top right to corner, then choose Connect to existing projects or Create a new project:
If you prefer, you can go back to the Project and link the dataset from there following the instructions above.
